Heater and AC Installation and Plumbing Vent
System
We began this week by trimming out the windows and the faux barn door in preparation for the garage siding. We
wanted to work outside to stay out of the way of the guys who were installing the gas lines for the cook top and the
fireplace.
The next day our heater and AC unit arrived. This AC unit was installed in just a couple hours but it took
a couple days to hook up the heating unit. We still don't have heat though since they had to send to
Phoenix for an LP orifice. There is a difference in the size when it comes to natural gas and propane and
you have to be very careful not to use the wrong burner
.
While all this was taking place we finally got started on the plumbing vent system.
The 2" pipe you see here will vent both the upstairs and half bath toilets. There are
rules about the size and number of vents required so before you jump into this stuff
you have to be sure your plan will meet the local requirements.
The "boss" busied herself by installing the insulation in the upstairs walls. This is a tedious
job but must be done carefully. Once all the insulation in the walls is installed a vapor
barrier will be installed prior to the T&G sheeting.
On Wednesday our interior doors arrived. We opted not to include the doors in our kit
because they were not pre-hung so we ordered ours from a local shop that makes custom fit
pre-hung doors. Now however you can get pre-hung doors with your kit direct from Kuhns
Bros.
This is a composite picture of the majority of the upstairs vent system. A 3" vent through the roof splits into two
2" vents and serves most of the plumbing in the guest bathroom, master bath and laundry room. This vent
system will all converge in the crawl space with a 3" waste line that will be connected to the septic system line
that is already installed through the foundation. This is a lot of work and must be done well since the system has
to be pressurized to pass inspection. Any leaks could let sewer gasses into the structure instead of venting them
outside.
On Friday night it decided to start snowing. By noon on Saturday we had about 15" so we decided to quit while we
could still get out of our driveway. It continued to snow through Sunday morning with a total accumulation of 31".
They call this area the White Mountains for a reason you know.
That’s it for this week. Next week we'll continue with the plumbing
vent installation, insulation and hopefully we'll get started framing
the porches providing the weather cooperates.
Check back soon.
