Completing the Front Porch Structure

We spent the first part of the week completing the majority of the front porch structure. As was mentioned before the front porch is extensive and has four complicated corners we had to deal with. Needless to say we are happy to be finished with part of the project.

Now that the basic structure is complete we began the installation of the fascia. This is a necessary step prior to sheeting and since it will be visible once the porch is complete care had to be taken with each joint and corner cut to make sure everything fit together correctly.

We worked our way around the house installing the fascia till we got to the master bathroom. Here the porch roof actually becomes part of the "house" roof. This area will be insulated so blocking is required to ensure the insulation won't work its way into somewhere it’s not supposed to be.

Here you see the "boss" massaging some of the blocking into position. We were also greeted here with another corner. This one was a little different in that the overhang on the side of the house (which is 1 foot) becomes 2 feet when it turns the corner. This probably wouldn't be a big deal for professionals but it took us amatures a little time to interpret the plans and figure out how to frame this section.

With the basic structure complete we needed to get this section sheeted quickly. The weather channel was calling for snow that evening and we wanted to make sure all the "stuff" stored in this area was protected. Kuhns Brothers supplies standard 1/2" sheeting with their homes however if you have different requirements in your area they will provide whatever your building code requires. The building code in our area calls for 5/8" sheeting because of the potential for high snow loading up here in the mountains.

We have hired a couple guys to help us finish the sheeting so thankfully we will be able to get this done quickly. With the extra help we'll be able to do in a day what it would take just the three of us almost a week to do. In this case spending the extra money is well worth it.

Here you can see how the corner is sheeted. The rear overhang will actually extend approximately 10 feet to the right where it will meet up with the back porch once it’s built. Right now, with the master bathroom sheeting complete, we are more than ready for a day off.

Some of you have asked us to provide more information on our exact location here in the beautiful White Mountains of Arizona. Well, ask and you shall receive..... When you cross the New Mexico - Arizona border just look for the big "X" in the sky. We're right there.

That's it for another week. This was a short week but it was productive anyway. Next week we hope to have the back porch structure complete so when our help shows up on Saturday we will be able to get both front and rear porches completely sheeted.
