White Mountain Log Homes - Why Kuhns Bros.

We looked at numerous companies and finally realized that we were comparing everything
to Kuhns Bros. We were planning on building our home ourselves so we were very careful
in the selection process. Some of the choices that became important to us are as follows.
Kiln Drying - Most other log homes have a problem with shrinking, sometimes as much as
3-5 inches in an 8 foot wall. That is not the case with a Kuhns Bros. home. The kiln drying
process preshrinks the logs so there is no shrinking in a Kuhns Bros. log home. Items such
as cabinets for example can be installed directly to the logs without any special
modifications. This is not the case with many log home manufacturers. Also Kuhns Bros
kiln drying kills any insects and crystallizes the sap to 160 degrees.
Ease of Building – Logs from Kuhns Bros. are ready to stack when they arrive. Labor is
saved because the logs are already cut to length and predrilled to accept the 12" lag bolts
that are used to hold the logs together. Kuhns Bros. provides easy to read blue prints, a
detailed construction manual, and hands on experience at a construction workshop.
Efficiency – With a Kuhns Bros. log home there is no reason to be concerned with air
filtration from logs settling. Kuhns Bros. homes are extremely air tight. The exterior
window trim is actually recessed into the log wall and sealed with caulking. The logs are
sealed using a strong butyl seal material that is installed between the tongue and groove of
the milled logs. The thermal mass and weather tight seal found in a Kuhns Bros. home
creates an energy efficient barrier which lowers heating and cooling cost when compared
to a standard similar sized stick built house.
Maintenance – Because the logs in a Kuhns Bros. log home are preshrunk, there is no need
to adjust window trim or cabinets as they are fastened directly to the logs. There is only
minimal caulking to the outside so there is very little that needs to be touched up every few
years. Basically we have found that about one good weekend every few years is all that it
takes to stain and maintain a Kuhns Bros. log home.
